Bump keys are a tool used in lock-picking to unlock pin tumbler locks, which are among the most common types of locks. These incredible keys demonstrate the importance of understanding lock mechanisms to ensure the security of any premises, and are a must for any well rounded pentesting key set. They will undoubtedly prove to be a worthy addition to your pentesting tool kit, bug out bag, or every day carry.
The set comes with two bump rings, which when used in conjunction with the key, very slight constant tension, and a rapid tapping action with a bump hammer or improvised tool.. can unlock most locks within seconds when the proper technique is applied. They work by bumping the pins inside the lock upwards for a brief period of the time. When the pins raise above the sheer line, it allows the lock mechanism to freely turn.
Bump keys can be made for almost any keyway in which the corresponding lock implements the pin tumbler locking mechanism. If you want a custom keyway not listed here to be added to this or another set, or you want to create your own set.. don't hesitate to give us a shout and we'll make it happen.
The keys are cut to code using the maximum depth for each original manufacturer's key bitting specification. To ensure the best performance possible, the cuts are offset half a space from the tip of the key. Every key before order fulfillment is personally tested on a lock with difficult bitting to ensure effectiveness. Licensed locksmith, buy with absolute confidence!
Bump keys are a powerful tool for locksmiths and security professionals, but they should be used responsibly and legally.
------------------------------------------
Prevention: To protect against bump key attacks, there are quite a few options. For example, high-security locks with special pin designs or false gates can be implemented effectively making them un-susceptible to bumping. Spool pins, pins with varying heights, as well as springs with varying resistance can also prove to be effective against this kind of attack.
High-Security Locks: These locks have complex pin configurations that are more resistant to bumping and other forms of lock picking.
Security Pins: Some locks can be fitted with special pins that make them more resistant to bumping. Upgrade your lock cylinders with security pins that are designed to be bump-resistant. These pins add an extra layer of complexity that makes bumping much more difficult.
Shallow Drilling: One or more pin stacks in a lock can be drilled shallower than the others, making it difficult for a bump key to engage the pins properly.
Keyway Selection: Choose a lock with a unique keyway that is less common and harder to match with a standard or more common bump key.
Smart Lock Retrofits: Consider installing a smart lock retrofit device, like the Switchbot Lock Pro, which fits over your existing deadbolt and offers various unlocking methods, including high-torque mechanisms resistant to bumping.
Lock Guards: Install anti-bump lock guards or devices that prevent the lock’s plug from rotating, even if a bump key is used.
High-Security Deadbolts: Replace your standard deadbolt with a high-security version that includes built-in bump resistance and other security features.
Remember, while these methods can greatly reduce the risk of bump key attacks, maintaining a comprehensive approach to security, including alarms and surveillance, is always advisable.
